Description
Uththararamaya, also known as Gal Vihara, is a Buddhist temple located in the ancient city of Polonnaruwa in Sri Lanka. This historical site is renowned for its impressive rock-cut statues of Lord Buddha, carved into a granite rock face. The Gal Vihara is considered one of the finest examples of ancient Sinhalese rock carving and sculpture.
The main attractions at Gal Vihara include four notable statues:
- Standing Buddha (Sthavira): This is the tallest statue among the four, standing at approximately 7 meters. The Buddha is depicted in the Abhaya Mudra, a gesture of reassurance and protection.
- Seated Buddha (Parinirvana): This statue represents the Buddha in a reclining position, known as the Parinirvana Mudra. It symbolizes the Buddha’s final moments on Earth and his attainment of Nirvana.
- Seated Buddha (Dhyana Mudra): The Dhyana Mudra represents the Buddha in a seated position with hands in meditation gesture. This statue is considered to depict the Buddha in deep meditation.
- Standing Buddha (Ananda Thero): This smaller standing Buddha statue is often identified as Ananda Thero, a close associate and cousin of the Buddha. It is notable for the unique hand gesture known as the “week-joining” mudra.
