Description
The Toluvila Buddha Statue is an ancient sculpture located near Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka. It is a colossal standing Buddha statue carved out of solid rock. This statue is considered one of the finest examples of ancient Buddhist sculpture in Sri Lanka.
The Toluvila Buddha Statue stands approximately 21 feet (6.4 meters) tall and is carved into a natural rock outcrop. It depicts the Buddha in the “Abhaya Mudra” or “Gesture of Reassurance,” with the right hand raised in a gesture of protection and fearlessness.
The statue is believed to date back to the Anuradhapura period, which spanned from the 4th century BC to the 11th century AD. It is situated in a serene and picturesque location amidst lush greenery, providing a tranquil atmosphere for visitors to admire its beauty and spiritual significance.
