Description
Rankoth Vehera is a prominent stupa located in the ancient city of Polonnaruwa, Sri Lanka. Polonnaruwa served as the capital of Sri Lanka during the 11th to 13th centuries AD, and Rankoth Vehera is one of the architectural marvels left from that era.
The name “Rankoth Vehera” translates to “Golden Pinnacle Stupa” in English. It is the largest stupa in Polonnaruwa and is notable for its massive size and impressive architectural design. The stupa stands at a height of approximately 55 meters (180 feet) and has a circumference of around 170 meters (560 feet).
Rankoth Vehera is believed to have been built by King Nissanka Malla (1153–1186 AD), one of the prominent rulers of the Polonnaruwa Kingdom. The stupa is adorned with intricate carvings and decorative elements, showcasing the artistic and architectural skills of the ancient craftsmen.
Today, Rankoth Vehera remains an important religious site for Buddhists, attracting pilgrims and visitors from all over Sri Lanka and beyond. It is also a popular tourist attraction, offering visitors a glimpse into the rich history and cultural heritage of Sri Lanka’s ancient kingdoms.
