Description
Pidurutalagala is the tallest mountain in Sri Lanka, standing at an impressive height of 2,524 meters (8,281 feet) above sea level. It is located in the central part of the island, near the town of Nuwara Eliya, in the Nuwara Eliya District.
The name “Pidurutalagala” is derived from the Sinhala language, with “Piduru” meaning “straw” and “Talagala” meaning “rock.” The mountain is also sometimes referred to as Mount Pedro in English.
Pidurutalagala is not only the highest point in Sri Lanka but also serves as a prominent landmark and a significant geographical feature of the island. The mountain is part of the Central Highlands of Sri Lanka, which is renowned for its scenic beauty, cool climate, and biodiversity.
The summit of Pidurutalagala is home to a radar station operated by the Sri Lanka Air Force, making it a restricted area for the general public. However, visitors can still enjoy stunning views of the surrounding landscape from various vantage points in the region.
Nuwara Eliya, often referred to as “Little England,” is a popular tourist destination near Pidurutalagala. The town is known for its colonial-era architecture, beautiful gardens, tea plantations, and cool climate. Many visitors to Nuwara Eliya take the opportunity to explore the nearby hills and enjoy activities such as hiking, birdwatching, and exploring waterfalls.
