Description
The stupa is believed to have been built during the reign of King Mahasena (273–301 AD) of the Anuradhapura Kingdom. Kiri Vehera is characterized by its unique architectural design and is considered one of the finest examples of stupa construction from the ancient period in Sri Lanka.
The name “Kiri Vehera” translates to “Milk Stupa” in English, and according to legend, it is said that the stupa was built with the support of a milk rice offering made by a village girl. The stupa is also associated with several ancient myths and legends, adding to its cultural and religious significance.
Kiri Vehera attracts pilgrims and visitors from all over Sri Lanka, especially during religious festivals and auspicious occasions. The stupa is surrounded by a serene and tranquil environment, making it an ideal place for meditation and spiritual reflection.
