Description
Wasgamuwa National Park is a protected area located in the Matale and Polonnaruwa districts of Sri Lanka. Established in 1984, it covers an area of about 36,900 hectares and is renowned for its rich biodiversity, particularly its population of elephants. The park is part of the elephant corridor in Sri Lanka, facilitating the movement of these majestic creatures between the larger protected areas of the country.
Apart from elephants, Wasgamuwa National Park is home to a variety of wildlife including sloth bears, leopards, sambar deer, spotted deer, wild boar, and water buffalo. The park is also a birdwatcher’s paradise with over 140 species of birds recorded, including endemic species like the Sri Lanka junglefowl and Sri Lanka grey hornbill.
